East Coast Day Trip: Khorfakkan, Dibba & Kalba Guide

Khorfakkan, Dibba and Kalba make the UAE's best east coast day trip. Waterfalls, fjords and mangroves — plus group transport tips. Get a free quote on WhatsApp.

Everyone knows Dubai's coastline. Far fewer visitors discover the UAE's other coast — the east, where the Hajar mountains drop straight into the Gulf of Oman. Khorfakkan, Dibba and Kalba, all in the Emirate of Sharjah, pack waterfalls, fjord-like khors, mangrove reserves and some of the country's best snorkelling into a single day trip from Dubai.

It is a longer drive than most Dubai excursions — about two hours each way — which is why group transport matters here. This guide covers the three towns, what to do in each, and how to run the day smoothly for a group.

The UAE's Other Coast

The east coast feels like a different country from Dubai: mountain roads instead of highways, fishing harbours instead of marinas, and a pace that slows the moment you cross the Hajar range. For groups that have "done" Dubai's malls and beaches, this is the day trip that surprises people most.

The three towns sit within 40 minutes of each other, so a good plan can cover all three — though most groups pick two and do them properly.

Khorfakkan: Amphitheatre, Waterfall & Beach

Khorfakkan is the star of the east coast and the natural first stop. The town has been transformed in recent years with genuinely impressive additions:

Allow two hours here. Coaches drop right at the amphitheatre plaza — no parking hunt.

Dibba: Fjords, Dhows & Snorkelling

Thirty minutes north, the coastline turns dramatic. Dibba sits near Musandam's doorstep, and its khors (sea inlets) cut between sheer mountain walls like Norwegian fjords in miniature.

This is the adventure stop: dhow cruises into the khors, with swimming and snorkelling in water far clearer than anything on Dubai's coast. Dolphins are regularly spotted. Most cruises run 3–4 hours with lunch, gear and guides — book ahead, as boats fill fast on weekends.

For groups that prefer land, Dibba's Friday Market (open daily despite the name) is a lively stop for fruit, plants, carpets and local snacks.

Kalba: Mangroves & Quiet Shores

South of Khorfakkan, Kalba is the quiet one — a birdwatchers' favourite. The Kalba Mangrove Reserve (Khor Kalba) is the UAE's oldest mangrove forest and home to the rare white-collared kingfisher, turtles and rays. Kayak tours through the mangrove channels are peaceful and suitable for all ages.

Kalba's beach is long, empty and beautiful — the anti-JBR. If your group wants one genuinely tranquil hour, this is where to take it.

What to Pack & When to Go

Best season: October to April. Summer (June–September) is brutally hot on the east coast with little shade — if you must go, keep it to a Khorfakkan morning and an air-conditioned afternoon.

Pack: swimwear and towels, reef-safe sunscreen, hats, water shoes for rocky entries, and a change of clothes. The coach stays with you all day, so bags, coolers and spare clothes ride safely in the luggage hold.

Friday note: the east coast gets busy with local weekend traffic on Friday afternoons. Start early.

Getting There as a Group

Here is the honest truth about the east coast drive: the mountain road from Dubai (via the Sharjah–Kalba road or through Fujairah) is scenic but demanding — winding descents, heavy trucks, and long stretches with few services. For a group, self-driving in convoy is the worst option: different paces, no overtaking room, and guaranteed separation.

A private coach with an experienced driver changes the day completely:

Alamal Alawal runs east coast trips weekly with our 51-seat Higer coach, 35-seat bus and Coaster for smaller parties. If your group wants the dhow cruise in Dibba, we coordinate timing with the boat operators so nobody waits around.

Pair this trip with our Dubai city tour by private bus on another day for the complete two-coast UAE experience.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the east coast from Dubai? Khorfakkan is about 130 km — roughly two hours each way depending on traffic and route. Dibba adds another 30 minutes north; Kalba is 20 minutes south of Khorfakkan.

Can we swim at these beaches? Yes. Khorfakkan Beach and Kalba Beach are public, clean and swimmable. Dibba's best swimming is from the dhow cruises, which stop at snorkelling spots.

Can we do all three towns in one day? Yes with an early start (7am pickup), but it is a full day. Most groups do Khorfakkan + Dibba, or Khorfakkan + Kalba. Tell us your priority and we will plan the route.

Is the mountain road safe for a big coach? Yes — coaches run it daily. The key is an experienced driver who knows the descents and the truck traffic patterns. All our chauffeurs are trained on UAE mountain routes.
